It seemed unfair — the standing in the cold, the waiting for the light, the long drive out and the longer drive back, all compressed into something a stranger would scroll past in less time than it takes to blink. The math of attention versus effort has never been on photography’s side, and the feed has only sharpened the imbalance.

I don’t think it bothers me anymore. Not because the math has changed — it hasn’t, it’s worse — but because I’ve come to understand what the math was actually measuring.

The hours weren’t an investment in being seen. They were the work of seeing. The standing was for me. The waiting was for me. The image at the end is the residue of an attention that already happened, whether or not anyone else ever spends a second on it. The photograph isn’t the point. The looking was the point. The photograph is just what’s left over.

Once you understand that, the feed stops being a verdict. It’s just a place where some of the residue ends up. Most of it scrolls past. Some of it doesn’t. A few people stop, longer than they meant to, and read the sky, and notice the texture of the ground, and for them the second becomes a minute and the minute becomes a small private experience that has nothing to do with the platform it arrived on.

That’s enough. It has to be, because that’s all the medium can promise in a world built for motion. Photography is a bet on the one person who slows down. Video is a bet on everyone. Both are honest bets. They’re just different games.

I keep playing this one because the standing — the actual being-there part, the cold and the patience and the watching the light decide what it wants to do — is something no algorithm can give me, and no feed can take away. The image is downstream of that. It’s a souvenir of an hour I would have spent there anyway.

If someone stops long enough to feel a piece of it, that’s a gift. If they don’t, the hour was still mine.

Why making black and white photographs is its own reward — a photographer reflects on creative process, attention, and what the medium can truly promise.

[14
35,5,36,13
post-133","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-photography","tag-black-and-white","tag-contemporary-photography","tag-creative-process","tag-visual-art
["GET
