Stanford HAI’s 2026 AI Index Report — the annual benchmark on the state of artificial intelligence.

Now in its ninth edition, the Stanford HAI AI Index tracks where AI actually stands rather than the hype cycle around it. This year’s edition spans nine chapters covering research and development, technical performance, responsible AI, the economy, science, medicine, education, policy, and public opinion.

A few headline threads: a major coding benchmark jumped from 60% to near 100% in a single year, organizational AI adoption reached 88%, and roughly 4 in 5 university students now use generative AI. At the same time, the report frames 2026 as a year where AI capability accelerated faster than governance, with the long-standing U.S.-China performance gap narrowing to near parity in several model categories.

Worth a read if you’re trying to separate signal from noise in the AI conversation.
